Tomorrow we are going to learn more about the masonry apprenticeship program that was a big factor in our decision to move back from whence we came. We’re getting a tour of the facilities & hoping to see some of the work that comes out of a collaborative project between a group of university architecture students & the bricklaying apprentices that happens each January. As you may or may not know, Mr. Quake discovered a deep, latent passion for masonry construction after doing some reflection on work & job satisfaction while we were in Maine, and then subsequently trying his hand at mason tending. As the library books on brick work, fireplaces, chimneys piled up & rotated through the stack on his nightstand, I began to realize just how strong his drive for this was & couldn’t help but be infected by his excitement over this new pursuit.
We take a lot of walks & runs around the neighborhood these days & almost everywhere we go, I receive mini-lessons in masonry construction techniques, as well as possibilities for our own future home (which he hopes to brick himself). It’s been a good way to cultivate optimism & construct a little vision of a bright future – brick by brick.
